Jessica began And The People in the fall of last year. She started making candles after learning that many candles sold in stores actually contain large amounts of synthetic chemicals that are potentially dangerous. After teaching herself the craft, she fell in love with it and launched a brand dedicated to creating sustainably homemade bath and body products and candles using natural, safe ingredients. Her aim is to not only help the earth, but the people on it too.
Jessica’s Earth Day Tip: Buy your everyday items locally as much as possible, and then repurpose the containers. By buying locally produced items, you are helping the economy, lowering your carbon footprint by not having items shipped, and you are eliminating waste from packaging required for shipping. When you’re done with your item, get creative and find some way to reuse the packaging. For example, our candle jars can be reused as vases, pen holders, storage for nuts, bolts, beads, etc.. You can even melt the remaining wax out of the jar in the oven (peel off all paper labels, using warm soapy water to remove any residue, place upside down on a foil lined pan at 150 for 20 minutes, then wipe with a paper towel), run it through the dishwasher, then use it as a drinking glass with a travel lid.
You can purchase Jessica’s locally made candles, perfume sticks, lip balms, and body butters at the Earth Day Market on Sunday, April 27th from 11-5pm in Old Town Square!
